If You’ve Ever Wondered Why ‘Pounds’ Is Abbreviated As ‘lbs’, Here’s Your Answer

Most of you out there probably don’t even notice the author name when reading an article. For the most part, that’s how I browse the Internet. Only on a handful of sites across the web do I take notice of who wrote an article before I read it. For you bros out there who do take notice, if you’ve been reading my articles here at BroBible long enough you’ve probably noticed that I’ve got a bit of an obsession with sharing meaningless trivia. The type of facts which have no practical place in the world outside of a Jeopardy! competition or trivia contest down at the local watering hole.

Today we’re talking about one of the most bro abbreviations on the planet. We eat half-pound burgers. We put up 45-pound plates at the gym like it’s nothing. We spend pounds at the pub (when we’re on vacation across the pond). Why do we abbreviate ‘pounds’ to ‘lbs’?

That’s an answer put forth in the video above from Business Insider, also an answer which you can read in their article here. Typically, I’d spell it out for you bros but I’ll give you the abbreviated version today: Latin. Want a deeper explanation you’ll have to watch the video or follow that link!
