Heading into the 2024 NFL Season, the San Francisco 49ers were second-favorites to win the Super Bowl behind the Kansas City Chiefs. But, things did not quite go as planned for the San Francisco 49ers and Brock Purdy.
The team went a very disappointing 6-11 as they struggled with injuries. And, Brock Purdy showed plenty of regression from his fantastic 2023 season that nearly ended with a Super Bowl victory.
But, on Wednesday, just days after the end of the regular season, 49ers brass appeared to commit to Brock Purdy long-term, sparking discussion around the NFL.
Purdy, who was the last pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, is eligible for a contact extension this offseason. Based on last season, a year that nearly saw him win the MVP, he was in line to get a monster contract that could’ve made him the highest paid quarterback in the league, believe it or not.
It’s not like Purdy was bad this year. He threw for 3,864 yards and 20 touchdowns against 12 interceptions despite a rotating cast of weapons that battled injuries all year. But, that’s a far cry from the season he had in 2023 when he was the most efficient quarterback in the NFL. In 2023, Purdy was the NFL’s most efficient passer with a whopping 113 passer rating and a league-leading 9.6 yards per attempt.
The 49ers are betting on the guy that they saw in 2023, it seems.
49ers GM John Lynch of QB Brock Purdy and his upcoming contract: "What we know about Brock is that he's our guy. We have interest in him being around for a long, long time."
Purdy is now officially extension eligible.

Is it the right choice? Personally, I would not be giving Brock Purdy a mega-deal that could be hard to get out of. I’m not sold that he’s a true franchise quarterback, as he regressed this year when his situation wasn’t quite as good. But, I understand that it’s hard to start over, and the 49ers don’t want to do that.
