The Yankees’ season may be over following their 6-2 loss to the Red Sox in the AL Wild Card Game, but that doesn’t mean the franchise’s cocky attitude has taken any sort of hit.

After his team got bounced from the postseason yet again, Aaron Boone told reporters that the rest of the MLB has “closed the gap” on the Yankees. It makes zero sense for Boone to say that, but it’s exactly what he said.

“We’ve got to get better in every aspect,” Boone explained. “Because it’s not just the Red Sox and the Astros now in our league. Look at our division, the Rays are a beast, Toronto, there’s some teams in the Central that are better and better, teams in the West that are better and better, teams that have closed the gap on us.”

The Yankees didn’t even win their own division and finished fifth in the American League. The Yanks have won just one AL pennant since 2004 compared to four from the Red Sox and two from the Rays.

Boone saying that the rest of the league has “closed the gap” given the Yankees’ lack of success for the last decade-plus may be the most Yankee thing ever said.

As you can imagine, folks on Twitter torched Boone for his comments after the game.

It’ll be interesting to see just how much the rest of the league closes the gap on the Yankees next year when the hype surrounding the franchise will be high yet again, as it always is.
