The college football world can often be an ugly place filled with overly excitable fans who forget their humanity in the name of senseless fandom.

However, that’s not always the case, as one thoughtful Alabama Crimson Tide fan proved this week after their team’s big win over the Mississippi State Bulldogs and superstar quarterback Kamario Taylor.

The Tide rolled past the Bulldogs, 56-23, in Davis Wade Stadium, which is notorious for its fans and their ever-ringing cowbells. The cowbell tradition dates back to the early 1900s and is a special part of every Mississippi State home game.

Unfortunately, during this particular home game, Taylor’s mother, LaQuandra Conner, somehow lost her cowbell and it found its way into the hands of an Alabama fan.

Initially, the Bama fan, Robert Callaway,  claimed to have purchased the cowbell from an angry Mississippi State fan that was leaving the stadium amid the team’s blowout.

He also claims that he did not know who the cowbell belonged to, only that it had a picture of Taylor and his name painted on it.

When Taylor’s mother asked for the Cowbell to be returned, he said he would only do so in exchange for a signed jersey.

Eventually, however, cooler heads prevailed. Callaway contacted the Mississippi State athletic department and discovered the Bell did actually belong to Taylor’s mother. At first, he believed he was being trolled in the comments.

Once he established that the bell truly belonged to Taylor’s family, he arranged to have it returned.

In the end, a situation that looked like it could show the worst of sports fandom actually showed the best of it. Taylor’s mother got her cowbell back, and the Bama fan got a chance to do the right thing.
