Women's volleyball player over beer
The NIL Era has given college athletes across the country the ability to capitalize on their personal brand. Football and basketball players tend to lead the pack, but a women’s volleyball player gearing up for her freshman year at Marquette has already struck gold thanks to a name and number combo that beer lovers are flocking to.
It’s been a little over five years since the landmark Supreme Court ruling that forced the NCAA to abandon its longstanding stance on amateurism virtually overnight while permitting student-athletes to profit from their name, image, and likeness.
Most fans of college sports thought that development was a positive one in theory, and while it has come with its upsides (like the return of EA Sports’ college football video game franchise), it has been a divisive one in practice thanks to its impact on the landscape.
Thousands of players are now de facto professionals based on the NIL deals and revenue-sharing agreements that can be worth millions of dollars, and it’s hard to argue the spirit of college sports hasn’t been eroded as the entire pastime continues to skid down a slippery slope.
However, there are plenty of examples of NIL working as most people felt it should have when it was instituted, which is certainly the case with a women’s volleyball player at Marquette.
Marquette women’s volleyball player Alicia Beers “6 Beers” jersey is one of the best-selling pieces of apparel in the country
On August 10th, the NIL Store (which peddles officially licensed apparel for over 140 schools and more than 40,000 college athletes) tweeted out a list of the people who were responsible for the best-selling jerseys in the country during the first week in August.

It was led by Notre Dame running back Aneyas Williams, and you probably won’t be shocked to learn that the Top 5 consisted entirely of football and men’s basketball players. Nebraska women’s volleyball star Harper Murray came in sixth, and the seventh spot was occupied by Alicia Beers, who plays the same sport at Marquette but has not appeared in a single match for the Golden Eagles.
As the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel notes, there’s a reason her jersey made an appearance, as there is a thirst among fans of a certain adult beverage who have been drawn to sweatshirts and tees that read “6 BEERS” thanks to the number she’s opted for.
Beers, who graduated from Slinger High School in Wisconsin early to join the volleyball team at Marquette for its season last spring, isn’t the only college player with that surname; Oklahoma tight end Rocky Beers has also capitalized on his moniker, and her brother Ashton wears 78 as an offensive lineman at Minnesota.
However, the fact that her jersey is the apparel equivalent of a six-pack has seemingly hit a sweet spot (the fact that Marquette is in Wisconsin, a state known for its love of suds, probably doesn’t hurt). She didn’t reveal exactly how much she’s made, but she noted, “It was kind of cool to see how much it was selling.”
You love to see it.
