American Fork beat Lone Peak during the high school football game in Utah on Thursday despite a last-second controversy. The Knights might’ve scored a game-winning touchdown on the final play.
It was ruled short!
A lack of replay in high school football led to an unfortunate result for a team in desperate need of a statement win. Video appeared to show the opposite of what was called on the field.
American Fork won the Utah high school football game.
American Fork High School is located in American Fork, Utah. Established in 1902, it is one of the oldest high schools in the state with a total enrollment of ~2,300 students in Grades 10-12. Lone Peak High School is located in Highland, Utah. Established in 1997, it enrolls ~2,500 students in Grades 10-12.
The two campuses are separated by les than three miles. They are rivals.
Not only do these two schools not like each other by nature of proximity, their high school football programs are always competitive. Lone Peak won state championships in 2011, 2018 and 2021, and finished as the runner-up in each of the last two years. American Fork, which often makes a deep run in the playoffs, won two championships in the 1960s and reached the title game in 2014, 2018 and 2019.
The Cavemen entered Thursday’s game ranked No. 9 in the state at 5-1. Their only loss was on the road at California powerhouse Mater Dei.
The Knights entered Thursday’s game ranked No. 6 in the state at 3-3. Their three losses were to Florida powerhouse IMG Academy, Las Vegas powerhouse Bishop Gorman, and reigning state champion Corner Canyon.
It was a back-and-forth matchup that came down to the final possession.

There was enough time on the clock for one last possession. The Knights took over with less than 20 seconds remaining.
Did Lone Peak score a touchdown on the final play?
Lone Peak quickly advanced the ball into opposing territory. There was only one second left.
The Knights had the ball at the 31-yard-line with one final play. They chose not to kick a lengthy field goal to try and force overtime. They decided to throw to the end zone. The pass was completed right at the one-yard-line in the corner near the sideline.
A struggle ensued. Lone Peak’s wide receiver tried to force the ball into the end zone. American Fork tried to keep him out.
Did he get in? It depends on who you ask. The officials said no. Game over.
However, the replay appears to show the pass-catcher stay in-bounds long enough for the ball to cross the goal line as he fell on top of the pylon. Here is a full look at the play:

Regardless of what the video might or might not show, there is no video replay for high school football in Utah. What the officials call on the field is the final decision. They ruled no touchdown. The Cavemen escaped with a controversial victory.
