It was a tough night in Detroit for Baker Mayfield and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, as their season ended with a killer interception at the start of what could’ve been a game-winning drive.

Having the ball with about 90 seconds left to play and a chance to tie the score with a touchdown and two-point conversation, the Bucs’ attempt at late-game heroics ended before it ever really began as Mayfield threw an interception on just the second play of the drive.

Making matters worse for Baker — who actually had a great year this season and has earned himself a fat contract in the offseason with the Bucs or elsewhere– is the fact that the loss to the Lions also came with a heavy helping of trash talk, which is something he received from both safety C. J. Gardner-Johnson after a 1st quarter pick and wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown, who clowned on Mayfielld’s infamous rookie year dance.

In their 31-23 NFC Divisional Round loss to the #3 seed Detroit Lions, Mayfield completed 26 of 41 passes (63%) for 349 yards, three touchdowns, and two interceptions, the first of which came on a tipped ball that wide receiver Mike Evans should have caught.

Nevertheless, interceptor C.J. Gardner Johnson used to opportunity to troll Mayfield as he pitched the ball back to him after the play.

As for the Detroit Lions, their win over Mayfield and the rest of the Bucs send them to the NFC Championship game against the San Francisco 49ers. Next Sunday’s tilt between the Niners and Lions will be Detroit’s first appearance in the NFC title game since 1991, which was also their only appearance (until now).

The San Francisco 49ers, who edged passed the Green Bay Packers in the divisional round by a score of 24-21, have opened as 7-point favorites over Dan Campbell’s fan-favorite Lions.
