A video of Argentina fans crossing a highway to get to MetLife Stadium went viral
As soon as the American host cities of the 2026 World Cup were announced, people began wondering how the infamously car-centric infrastructure that surrounds MetLife Stadium would handle the influx of carless tourists, particularly when the final rolled around. On Sunday, that question was answered.
On Sunday, ahead of the 2026 World Cup Final between Spain and Argentina — Spain won 1-0 over the 2022 champions to win the country’s second World Cup title — video went viral showing showing Argentina fans navigating their way to MetLife Stadium by crossing the highways on foot.

The highway these fans are crossing appears to be Route 3, which has five lanes on its westbound side as it passes MetLife.

MetLife Stadium has long been criticized for its car-centric design. Located in East Rutherford, New Jersey — surrounded by parking lots and highways — it is one of the least pedestrian-friendly major sports venues in the country as it’s surrounded on three of its four sides by major highways: Route 3, Route 17, and I-95.
The fans in the video appeared to be Argentina supporters, meaning they risked their lives traversing Route 3 only to see their team not only lose to Spain in the 2026 World Cup Final, but fail to register a single shot on target over the course of 120 minutes of action. Still, it was also very likely Messi’s final World Cup game for Argentina, so maybe it was still work the trek in the end.
Spain were ultimately deserved winners of the World Cup — they entered the tournament as the defending European champions and the betting favorites, and won all of their matches (except their opener, a draw against Cape Verde) while only conceding one goal.
