The Arizona Cardinals are getting mercilessly mocked on social media this week after their social media team decided to call Kyler Murray the team’s “franchise QB” on X.

The reason for the mockery isn’t so much that Kyler Murray is a bad quarterback (though his career 28-36-1 record as a starter is less than impressive), it’s that the last time the Cardinals thought they had a franchise quarterback on their hands and boasted about it was after the team drafted Josh Rosen.

Many fans forget (and many others do not) that Arizona took Josh Rosen with the 10th overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, then a month before the 2019 NFL Draft they tweeted this…

The Cardinals and their head coach Kliff Kingsbury them proceeded to tell Rosen that the organization was going to draft Murray with the first overall pick in the 2019 Draft. Only they did it just a minute before the pick was made.

According to Rosen, around that same time, Cardinals general manager Steve Keim didn’t contact him for months. Not when all the rumors were stirring about Murray being the team’s pick, not after they selected Kyler Murray, and not before or after they traded Rosen to Miami.

Rosen would go on to play for seven different teams over the next five years, throwing a combined 513 passes.

So forgive NFL fans, especially those who root for the Arizona Cardinals, if they feel like they’ve seen this movie before.

The post now has 12.4 million views (and counting), 1,000-plus quote tweets (and counting), and 400-plus comments (and counting). And there seems to be a theme to the quotes and comments.

“Let’s not act like the Cardinals didn’t do this exact same thing while they had Rosen before drafting Murray lmao,” read another comment.

“No question, heading into Combine week…” NFL reporter Ian Rapoport added.

The Arizona Cardinals do currently have the fourth overall pick in the upcoming 2024 NFL Draft. Will history repeat itself?
