Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield has had a career renaissance of sorts early on this season in Tampa Bay. But, he blamed the team’s 20-6 loss to the Detroit Lions on himself.

Here’s more, according to Pro Football Talk.

“We sucked today,’’ Mayfield said, via Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times. “I sucked today. We sucked today. It was awful from the get-go. Can’t play like that. We didn’t start fast. We didn’t pick it up in the middle and we didn’t finish strong. We have to be better.

“The Lions are a good ball club that if we play like that, we’re going to lose every time. We played good defense, the special teams [did] an amazing job again, and the offense — we just need to pick our s*** up. It’s really no other way around it.’’

It’s not even that Baker Mayfield was all that bad. He was 19/37 for 206 yards and no touchdowns with an interception. That’s not very good, but it’s not absolutely awful either.

Up to this point, Baker Mayfield had been playing excellent. Coming into Sunday, he had thrown seven touchdowns against just two interceptions and the Buccaneers got off to an impressive 3-1 start in a season where a lot of pundits had left them for dead following Tom Brady’s retirement.

The other part of the equation is that the Detroit Lions are a pretty darn good team, winners of 13 of their last 16 contests dating back to last year.

Baker Mayfield and the Buccaneers will look to get back on track in week 7 as they host the Falcons for a huge NFC South matchup with no clear favorite in that division.
