Kyle Hamilton was penalized for unnecessary roughness.

The Baltimore Ravens beat the Tennessee Titans on Sunday, 24-18. Baltimore was penalized 13 times for 131 yards in the contest.

One of those instances included a 15-yard penalty against Kyle Hamilton for unnecessary roughness. He didn’t read the mind of NFL referees.

The play was nearly costly as it provided the Titans a free first down. Tennessee would get the ball inside the two-yard line before being stopped on a fourth down conversion.

Kyle Hamilton didn’t hear a whistle.

In the first half, with the Baltimore Ravens leading 14-7, the Titans lined up with the ball around midfield. Tennessee called a timeout just before Cam Ward took the snap. The whistles were both late and muffled by crowd noise. Kyle Hamilton didn’t hear them.

He proceeded to drill the unassuming signal caller for what he thought was a sack. It wound up being a 15-yard penalty.

The social media reaction was largely the same. Most sided with Hamilton. He did not deserve to be punished for unnecessary roughness.

“If that was a penalty it was against the officials for a late whistle.”

“Absolutely trash call.”

“They literally blow the whistle as he’s hitting him.”

Luckily, the penalty wouldn’t be too costly. Although the Titans did receive 15 yards and a fresh set of downs, they’d ultimately be held off the scoreboard.

Tennessee was stuffed at the goal line by the Baltimore defense on four straight plays. They got no points then watched the Ravens drive 98 yards for a touchdown before halftime. Ball don’t lie.

Cam Ward was not hurt on the play. Baltimore was not hurt by the penalty. All’s well that ends well. It doesn’t change the fact that NFL referees punished Kyle Hamilton after putting in a difficult spot.
