Bear Bachmeier felt disrespected by Notre Dame as a recruit.

BYU defeated Notre Dame on Saturday night in Provo, 28-24. For starting quarterback Bear Bachmeier, it was redemption.

He was “disrespected” by the Fighting Irish during the recruiting process. The program chose another passer just as he looked to commit.

Hell hath no fury like a quarterback scorned. Bachmeier kept the receipts. The feelings of contempt never left. He used it as fuel over the weekend.

BYU upset Notre Dame.

Despite hosting, BYU entered as a 10-point underdog. They quickly announced their presence with an opening drive touchdown.

The Cougars jumped out to a 7-0 lead. They held a 21-10 advantage at halftime. While Notre Dame would claw its way back into the game to take a 24-21 fourth quarter lead, BYU regained the edge with a score on its final possession. They then held on, in somewhat controversial fashion, to win.

Bear Bachmeier shined. He threw a touchdown, caught a touchdown, and found the endzone twice on the ground. Notre Dame had no answers, particularly in the first half.

The quarterback was asked about his motivations after the performance. Scorn played a major role.

Bear Bachmeier was passed over.

Bachmeier said Notre Dame disrespected him and his family during his recruitment. Adam Gorney of Rivals wrote about what happened behind the scenes back in September of 2023.

Gorney says Bachmeier, then a four-star prospect from California, was close to a commitment to the program. The Irish preferred Deuce Knight, another four-star signal caller in the cycle.

Knight committed to Notre Dame on September 18, 2023. He took Bachmeier’s spot. Five months later, Bachmeier committed to Stanford. Knight would later decommit and pledge to Auburn. Neither signal caller ended up at Notre Dame.

Bachmeier remembers the recruitment well. He felt crossed. The quarterback made the Irish pay for it on Saturday.

With the win, BYU announced its status as a national championship contender. The Cougars are now 6-0 and have an inside track to the College Football Playoff.
