Youngstown State QB Beau Brungard
There are quarterback stat lines that look impressive, and then there are stat lines that look like somebody accidentally lowered the difficulty setting in College Football 27. Youngstown State quarterback Beau Brungard completed 20 of 23 passes Saturday, threw six touchdowns, and somehow decided that was not enough, so he also ran for two more.
Brungard finished with 290 passing yards and 111 rushing yards as No. 10 Youngstown State demolished Duquesne 70-13. The game recap shows his eight total touchdowns set a school record, while his six passing scores established another one.
Beau Brungard Threw Twice As Many Touchdowns As Incompletions
That sentence deserves to be read again: Six touchdown passes and three incomplete passes.
Brungard completed 87% of his throws, did not turn the ball over, and averaged 12.6 yards every time he attempted a pass. He also averaged 7.9 yards on 14 rushing attempts, bringing his personal offensive output to 401 yards.
The only disappointing part of his afternoon was apparently that Youngstown State eventually had to let somebody else play quarterback, as seven of Brungard’s eight touchdowns came before halftime.
Youngstown State scored 21 points in the first quarter and another 28 in the second, walking into the locker room with a 49-10 lead. Brungard had already thrown five touchdown passes and run for two more by then.
He broke the school’s single-game passing-touchdown record with his sixth scoring throw in the third quarter before his afternoon was basically finished.
His touchdowns were not the result of force-feeding one receiver either. Brungard threw scores to five different players, with Lynn Wyche-El catching two while Bryan Hunt, Jeremiah Sanders, Dorian Williams and Kellen Moyer each grabbed one.

The even scarier part for Youngstown State’s future opponents is that this was not some random backup catching Duquesne completely by surprise.
Brungard entered 2026 as the reigning Walter Payton Award winner, given annually to the top offensive player in FCS football. He had already produced another ridiculous performance in Youngstown State’s opener against Mercyhurst, throwing three touchdowns and running for two more.
Three games into the season, he has now accounted for 13 touchdowns.
His six passing scores Saturday broke a Youngstown State record previously shared by Kurt Hess and Demeatric Crenshaw. His eight total touchdowns established another program mark, while the Penguins also set a team record with seven touchdown passes after backup Malachi Lewis added one.
The official box score might contain the most disrespectful number of all: Youngstown State quarterbacks finished 28-of-32 for 407 yards, seven touchdowns and zero interceptions.
Duquesne basically spent three hours playing defense against an offense that forgot incomplete passes were legal.
Plenty of quarterbacks would happily take six touchdowns in a month.
Beau Brungard threw six while missing three passes, then casually ran for two more.
That seems unfair.
