Nearly 2,000 horses have competed in the Kentucky Derby since it was run for the first time in 1875. The owners of those entrants have come up with some very creative names, but there are some that really stand out when it comes to the best of the best.

The practice of giving thoroughbreds a unique label was well-established by the time the inaugural Kentucky Derby was held more than 150 years ago, and nearly every horse that has run the race since then has been identified by a bestowed moniker.
