Bill Belichick’s antagonistic relationship with the New York Jets dates back nearly three decades now, since he left the team after just a day as head coach to take the job with the New England Patriots in early 2000.

Belichick is out of the NFL now, having left the Patriots after the 2023 season and took the UNC head coaching job this offseason. But, this doesn’t mean he’s going to stop poking fun at the New York Jets.

Belichick spent 1997-1999 as an assistant coach with the Jets, before being promoted to head coach to replace the departed Bill Parcells. But, he resigned after just one day, and then beat the tar out of the Jets for over two decades. He was 37-11 against the Jets in New England.

Despite working in the college game now, the NFL is still on his mind. On a recent podcast appearance, he took aim at the New York Jets.

He’s got a point! Both Sam Darnold and Geno Smith have proven to be competent NFL quarterbacks after leaving the New York Jets. Meanwhile, the Jets haven’t had a good quarterback situation in over a generation. Even Aaron Rodgers showed some serious regression in a Jets uniform, though age and injury factored in there as well.

I hope that Bill Belichick never stops making fun of the Jets.
