When Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels left New England for the head coaching job in Las Vegas, it was a very big deal. The man who has 13 years of experience running one of he NFL’s most successful offense is no longer with the organization.

McDaniels’ departure left a big void in Bill Belichick’s coaching staff and the plan on how to replace him is not entirely clear. It has left much of the NFL very confused.

As of right now, failed New York Giants head coach Joe Judge is expected to work with the quarterbacks, but is listed as an “offensive assistant.” Meanwhile, failed Detroit Lions head coach Matt Patricia is expected to work with the offensive line. In addition, tight ends coach Nick Caley is thought to be taking on a larger role.

However, New England does not have an offensive coordinator or a quarterbacks coach, nor does the coaching staff have a true play-caller. To make things even more complicated, NFL free agency is just two weeks away.

Belichick surely has a plan, but nobody knows what it is.

Patriots insider Phil Perry is in Indianapolis for the NFL Combine this week. He recently spoke with Tom Curran’s Patriots Talk Podcast and shared insight about what other NFL personnel think of New England’s current setup.

They are very confused.

“I can just tell you, Tom, from talking to some people here and some folks around the league: People are flabbergasted at how this Patriots staff has come together. It’s focused on that offensive side specifically: What they’re going to do in terms of coaching the quarterback and calling the plays?”

Perry also said that people are giving Belichick the benefit of the doubt, because he is who he is and he always figures it out. However, the fact that two coaches are expected to coach position groups in 2022 that they have never coached before is causing quite the stir.

“My understanding is the coaches themselves will be talking a little bit more about roles for 2022 this week. So, if that’s how it shakes out, there are a lot of eyebrows raised here in Indianapolis. I’ll say that.”

It will be curious to see what Belichick ends up doing with his coaching staff. If things stay the way that they are, there will be a lot of questions that need to be answered.
