Much Skinnier Bob Huggins Reveals Why He Shot Down Phone Call With New West Virginia Coach

Bob Huggins continues to support West Virginia. Both the university and the state.

He raised nearly $700,000 at his annual fish fry charity event earlier this week!

Huggins, who was fired and/or resigned from his role as head basketball coach of the Mountaineers in June, has been completely sober since his arrest for DUI. The 70-year-old Hall of Famer looks to be of much greater health than he was at this time last year.

His face is far less flushed and his weight is noticeably down.

Even though things did not end well at West Virginia, Huggins continues to wear the WVU logo in support of his former program. He wore it on his hat at the 12th Annual Bob Huggins Fish Fry after first displaying his health transformation during his return to the school that once forced him out back in February.

It was interesting, though.

The Mountaineers hired Drake head coach Darian DeVries as their new head coach on Sunday after playing one full season with an interim. He tried to call Huggins. Huggins told him that it was a bad time.

To justify the snub, Huggins explained that he has been all over the state of West Virginia in an effort to support the people of the state. That was his priority, which is entirely fair. However, I fail to understand why that would keep him from having a quick chat with DeVries, unless he simply didn’t want to.

There is also a good bit of irony with the backdrop for the interview. Having a Busch Light poster behind him is an unfortunate coincidence considering the circumstances of his life over the last 10ish months…

All-in-all, Huggins’ 36-second conversation with WDTV5 was rather illuminating in more ways than one. He looks much healthier, raised a lot of money for a great cause, and continued to support West Virginia but did not give DeVries the time of day. Interesting…
