Boston’s Mayor Doesn’t Know Much About Boston Sports

Today, he declared he hopes Boston wins the “World Series Cup.” Now, I know about the World Series, and the World Cup, but I've never heard of the World Series Cup. Maybe it's something new and cool and exciting or maybe he just made a mistake. According to SI.com's Extra Mustard, it's probably the latter, since Menino has a history of screwing up.

In 2010, during a ceremony that dedicated a statue to Hall of Fame Bruins defenceman Bobby Orr to celebrate his iconic goal to win the 1970 Stanley Cup, Menino began talking about great moments in Boston sports history. At one point, Menino said it was Red Sox catcher Jason Varitek who “split the uprights” to help the New England Patriots win their first Super Bowl in 2002, when in fact he meant to say it was then-Patriots kicker Adam Vinatieri.

This year, he also referred to Patriots defensive tackle Vincent Wilfork as “Wilcock” and called the Gronk “Gonk.”

Maybe he's just getting old?
