It’s not rare for athletes to lose their temper during a game, and there are situations where some of them go a bit too far after reaching a tipping point. That was certainly the case with one woman in Brazil, who is facing criminal charges over an incident that led to her being suspended for five years and resulted in her team being kicked out of its league for the rest of the season.
The phrase “It’s just a game” is routinely trotted out by buzzkills who have trouble grasping why people can get so emotionally invested in the sports they play and watch, and it can be admittedly hard to understand why players and fans alike are as passionate as they are if you’ve never experienced a certain level of emotional investment.
Many athletes are naturally competitive people who’d probably be just as cutthroat in a corporate setting if they’d opted for another line of work, and that drive can be a gift and a curse when it comes to how you behave in situations where things aren’t going your way.
There’s a fine line between “fiery” and “felonious” when it comes to the manner in which you express your frustration, and one athlete in Brazil leapt over it before landing on the wrong side during a recent showdown.
A Brazilian soccer player was suspended for five years and could be arrested after assaulting an opponent
I know I used “soccer” in the headline, but the sport at the center of this story is technically futsal, a five-on-five indoor variation of the world’s most popular sport (and one that is governed by FIFA).
The game was invented in Uruguay in the 1930s and is especially popular in South American countries. That includes Brazil, which was the site of an Eusebio Municipal Women’s Futsal Championship game that unfolded in Fortaleza, Ceará on July 22nd.
According to The Sun, the match featured two amateur clubs, Projeto RDJ Esport Feminino and As Resenhas, going head-to-head in a contest where the former had a 1-0 lead when things took an ugly turn.
Projeto RDJ’s Ana Julia Alencar ended up face down on the floor toward the start of the second half following a hard tackle by Lara do Nascimento Costa, who proceeded to kick her in the head two times before throwing a punch at another opponent who swooped in to intervene.

The match was subsequently called off before Alencar was taken to the hospital for treatment (she thankfully avoided a serious injury), and the Eusebio Sports League brought down the hammer by hitting Costa with a five-year suspension and booting As Resenhas from the league for the remainder of the season.
There could be even more repercussions coming, as G1 reports police in Ceará have launched an investigation into the matter while working with the Public Prosecutor’s Office, which issued the following statement:
“The acts of violence, which culminated in physical assaults against two athletes on the court, affront the principles of sport, respectful coexistence, and the physical integrity of the competitors, demanding a firm response from the institutions responsible for protecting the legal order and security at sporting events.
The Public Prosecutor’s Office is closely monitoring the investigations conducted by the Civil Police of Ceará and is investigating the circumstances of the case and the potential criminal liability of the aggressor, taking the appropriate measures to ensure due accountability.”
That development wouldn’t be without precedent, as there have been other examples of athletes being charged for acts of violence.
That includes five NBA players who were involved in the “Malice at the Palace,” seven Michigan State football players who went after a couple of Michigan Wolverines in the tunnel in 2022, and a handful of NHL players (Dino Ciccarelli, Marty McSorley, and Todd Bertuzzi) who landed in court to answer for on-ice assaults.
