Brent Venables plans to go nuclear on his Oklahoma football players after a close win over unranked UCF. They are going to get more than an earful.

The sixth-ranked Sooners hosted the Knights in Norman on Saturday. They found themselves down by six entering the fourth quarter, but a pair of touchdowns put them back up by eight with just over three minutes left.

That was more than enough time for UCF to turn back around and score, which it did. However, Gus Malzahn dialed up an extremely unnecessary double pass to try and tie the game on the two-point conversion. It failed. Oklahoma won.

Although Venables’ team scraped by with a win, he is not happy with the performance. It is going to make for an awful Monday for his players.

Oklahoma will have the day off for recovery on Sunday, as is standard for college football. When the athletes get back in the facility next week, they are in for a rude awakening.

Venables announced that he is going to lay into the team as they start to prepare for Kansas next weekend and he did so publicly.

I love going in on Monday after a game at yelling at guys. And I’ve got a lot of yelling to do.

Woof. The Sooners are going to have a long 48 hours.

They will have to spend all day Sunday thinking about the reckoning that is coming on Monday. They will have to spend all day Monday getting chewed out by their head coach.

Maybe it will be the spark that the Sooners need. Maybe Brent Venables just wants to make his point.

Either way, it sure sounds like Monday is going to be pretty terrible. If the way that Venables ripped into the officiating crew is any indication, there is no reason to be envious of Oklahoma after their performance on Saturday and their head coach’s announcement during postgame. It’s going to be ugly!
