Brian Ferentz will not return as the offensive coordinator for the University of Iowa football program in 2024. The 40-year-old son of legendary head coach Kirk Ferentz announced that he is set to step down from his role at the end of this season.

Hawkeyes fans rejoiced at the news. Iowa’s offense has been abysmal in recent years and this season is no exception.

  1. vs. Utah State — 24 points
  2. @ Iowa State — 20 points
  3. vs. Western Michigan — 41 points
  4. @ Penn State — 0 points
  5. vs. Michigan State — 26 points
  6. vs. Purdue — 20 points
  7. @ Wisconsin — 15 points
  8. vs. Minnesota — 10 points

It gets even worse when you look at the last three seasons. Ferentz’s offense has ranked 99th, 123rd and 120th in scoring. There are only 132 teams in the FBS.

Things have been so bad that the university amended its offensive coordinator’s contract. The goal was to increase offensive scoring to average 25 points per game.

If the Hawkeyes did not score at least 325 points on the season, Ferentz would be fired.

Through the first eight games, Iowa is scoring 19.5 points per game. And that includes the 41-point outing against the Broncos. YIKES!

As a result of the terrible start, Brian Ferentz, his father Kirk, and the school agreed that he will step down after the year. His tenure with Iowa is four or five games away from coming to an end.

Brian Ferentz has an opportunity to do the absolute funniest thing possible.

The Hawkeyes’ remaining schedule is as follows:

  • @ Northwestern (played at Wrigley Field)
  • vs. Rutgers
  • vs. Illinois
  • @ Nebraska

Saturday’s game against the Wildcats already set a record. The Over/Under is set at just 30.5.

It is the LOWEST point total in college football history. Each of the previous two records were also set by games that included Ferentz!

This is where things could get hilarious.

None of Iowa’s next four games are especially difficult. They are all winnable games.

Ferentz has already announced his resignation. The Hawkeyes have shown that they can score points. They scored 41 against Western Michigan!

What if… Iowa’s offense finally clicks this weekend. It would be absolutely hilarious if Ferentz figures things out over the next month and scores far more than 25 points per game.

It would get even funnier if the Hawkeyes average more than 42 points per game over the next four weeks. That would put them over the 325-point mark.

At that point, what would Iowa do with Ferentz?!

Although his offense has been a running joke over the last few years, that joke is now dead. Ferentz is stepping down.

Thus, the funniest possible outcome now is if Brian Ferentz somehow saves his job.
