San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy’s trading cards are blowing up in value in the lead-up to Super Bowl LVIII.

Purdy, who has gone from the last pick out of Iowa State in the 2022 NFL Draft to now starting in a Super Bowl in just two years, has sent the trading card market into a frenzy.

According to Professional Sports Authenticator (PSA), who spoke to Sportico about it, Brock Purdy’s trading cards were the most submitted NFL player for authentication in 2024.

Not only that, since the start of the 2023 season, Purdy’s cards only trail Trevor Lawrence’s in that department. Lawrence, the exact opposite of Purdy, was the very first player taken in the 2021 NFL Draft.

The most-graded active quarterbacks behind Brock Purdy this season were (in order) CJ Stroud, Patrick Mahomes, Anthony Richardson, Trevor Lawrence, Joe Burrow, Jalen Hurts, Bryce Young, Justin Herbert, and Tua Tagovailoa.

One Brock Purdy trading card sold this month for $125,723 (2022 Panini Prizm Black Finite 1/1 RC). Another, sold in December 2023, went for $186,000 (2022 Panini National Treasures Stars & Stripes Platinum NFL Shield Patch).

Not bad for a guy who earned the honor of Mr. Irrelevant. (Speaking of which, has there been a more successful Mr. Irrelevant than Brock Purdy? His only real competition for that status is kicker Ryan Succop, so the answer has to be yes, right?)

“There’s a level of excitement and hype,” said PSA president Ryan Hoge. “There’s a new thing. ‘Okay, this person is going to be the next, you know, Manning, the next Brady, Nolan Ryan,’ whatever it is, whatever your sport … we all know the vast majority of these folks ultimately don’t become that next GOAT, but some do.”

Now the question is: what will Brock Purdy’s cards be worth if he actually wins Super Bowl LVIII? And what will they be worth if he can’t maintain this level of success for several more years?
