Bryson DeChambeau played his final round at The Masters alongside Rory McIlroy. The former claimed that the latter did not speak to him at any point during the day and made it sound like there was some underlying hostility.
That has since been disproved based on a new video from Sunday afternoon.
First and foremost, this is not at all uncommon in golf. Especially at The Masters. Especially during the final round in the final group. When I first heard DeChambeau’s comments, I was confused as to why it was such a big deal.
He told CBS that McIlroy “didn’t talk to him once all day.” I was not surprised even though his comments after the round made it seem like I should be.
DeChambeau implied that he was actively trying to talk to McIlroy as McIlroy tried to complete his career Grand Slam after years of catastrophic collapse. McIlroy was not interested in chatting.
Am I supposed to act like Tiger Woods didn’t do the same thing? Never did the greatest golfer of all-time chop it up with his competitor during the final 18 holes at The Masters. Rarely, if ever, do others.
And yet, Bryson DeChambeau seemed surprised by Rory McIlroy’s silence.
To be fair, it sounded as though the (lack of interaction) was strictly related to the importance of the moment. There were people who speculated about an outstanding beef between the two golfers because DeChambeau left for LIV while McIlroy stayed with the PGA. I don’t think so.
In addition, the claims of a cold shoulder were untrue. During the final round of The Masters, yes. Throughout the entire day, no.
McIlroy spoke with DeChambeau before they walked out onto the first tee. They even shared a cordial handshake and the former pat the latter on the back. It was a friendly exchange.
Seems friendly enough! https://t.co/sMM8c8FzzP pic.twitter.com/OC4RiqHUhb

Bryson DeChambeau said that Rory McIlroy did not speak to him at all. That is not completely accurate. They did not speak during the round. They did speak beforehand.
McIlroy finally won while refusing to chat. DeChambeau finished tied for fifth while trying to talk it up. That’s the end of it.
This was not a big deal to begin with. It is even less so now. Let’s move on!
