After the Carolina Panthers became the first NFL team to fire their head coach during the 2022 season following the Week 5 dismissal of Matt Rhule, it’s now quite clear that the franchise — after swinging and missing on both Sam Darnold and Baker Mayfield — is set to go through another rebuild.

Given that the 1-4 Panthers seem to be building towards the future, logic would suggest that the team would be looking to dump assets in order to receive some draft capital, especially when it comes to their Pro Bowl running back Christian McCaffrey, whose skills are virtually wasted on this inept offense.

With this in mind and apparently smelling a chance to strike, reports indicate that the Buffalo Bills — the preseason betting favorites to win the Super Bowl who have largely lived up to those lofty expectations so far — have reached out to Carolina to inquire about McCaffrey’s availability.

“A source has confirmed to me that the Bills have reached out to the Panthers about running back Christian McCaffrey,” tweeted New York state-based ABC 13 reporter Dan Fetes.

If the Bills were to able to add McCaffrey — one of the best dual threats the league has seen in recent years (when healthy) — stopping their highly-powered offense might truly become an impossible task.

During his six-year-long NFL career — although he played in just three games in 2020 and seven games in 2021 — the former Stanford Cardinal has rushed for 3,911 yards and 32 touchdowns while also catching 474 passes for 3,203 yards and another 18 touchdowns.

As for the mess in Carolina — who will likely be turning to third-string quarterback PJ Walker for the next few weeks — Steve Wilks, the former head coach of the Arizona Cardinals, will serve as interim coach.
