Rookie quarterback C.J. Stroud has made a lasting impression on the Houston Texans coaching staff during the team’s OTAs this week.
Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans expressed his amazement at Stroud’s performance, stating that it was “very eye-opening” how the young quarterback was handling the pressure and responsibilities of being a leader on the field.
According to Brooks Kubena of the Houston Chronicle, Stroud has taken control of the first-team snaps at quarterback, displacing Davis Mills.
Not only has Stroud shown great command in the huddles, but he has also displayed noticeable comfort and confidence in his play calls. Coach Ryans acknowledged Stroud’s progress, emphasizing that he is progressing in the right direction and has limitless potential.
Texans quarterback coach Jerrod Johnson echoed Coach Ryans’ sentiments, applauding Stroud for his remarkable footwork and timing, stating that the rookie is already far ahead of schedule in these areas.
It is clear that Stroud’s dedication and hard work during the offseason are paying off, and he is making a strong case to be the team’s starting quarterback when the regular season begins.
The Texans selected C.J. Stroud with the second overall pick of the 2023 Draft after Stroud had an outstanding college career at Ohio State.
Stroud consistently finished near the top of Heisman Trophy voting in consecutive years. He showcased his talents by throwing an impressive 85 touchdowns while only throwing 12 interceptions. Stroud’s completion rate of over 69 percent and average of nearly 10 yards per attempt highlighted his ability to make accurate throws downfield.
While the surrounding talent at Ohio State certainly played a role in Stroud’s success, as he had a plethora of future first-round receivers and top offensive tackles to work with, Stroud still took advantage of his opportunities and showcased his arm strength, accuracy, and ball placement.
Although he has room for improvement when operating outside of structured plays and could benefit from utilizing his mobility more, Stroud possesses the qualities of a potential franchise quarterback.
