Neither Ayala nor Colony will qualify for the high school football playoffs in California. A fight broke out during the postgame handshake line following their final game of the regular season.
It is unclear as to exactly what triggered the incident.
However, if I had to guess based on past experience, the high school football brawl started with an exchange of words. Whatever was said presumably did not go over well with a player on the losing team.
Ayala and Colony will not make the high school football playoffs in California.
Ruben S. Ayala High School is located in Chino Hills, California. It enrolls more than 2,500 students in Grades 9-12. The Bulldogs compete in the Palomares League as members of the CIF Southern Section in Division 6. Their high school football team entered Thursday’s regular season finale at 1-8.
Colony High School is located in Ontario, California. It enrolls more than 2,000 students in Grades 9-12. The Titans also compete in the Palomares League as members of the CIF Southern Section in Division 5. Their high school football team also entered Thursday’s regular season finale at 1-8.
Although neither program will qualify for the playoffs, there was a lot on the line during the last game of the year. Not only did the matchup determine which team would finish higher in the final Palomares League standings, it was about pride. The seniors were playing in the final game of their career. Two schools separated by less than 10 miles were playing for bragging rights.
Ayala traveled to Colony on Thursday night. It did not take long before it got out of hand. The latter defeated the former by a final score of 27-0. The Titans finished the year with two regular season wins while the Bulldogs finished with only one.
A fight broke out during the postgame handshake line.
Unfortunately, the final score was not the only thing that got out of hand. The postgame handshake line devolved into a brawl.
Based on the only known video of the incident, it appeared as though an Ayala player delivered the first blow. He pushed a Colony player, who shoved him right back. The Ayala player responded to the shove with a punch. Players on both teams started swinging.

Fortunately, coaches and officials were able to step in and deescalate the situation before it turned into something far more dangerous. No injuries were reported in the brawl— though I can’t imagine the player who threw a punch at a guy wearing a helmet is not dealing with a sore hand.
It is unclear as to whether the CIF will take action in response to the brief altercation. Both of their seasons are over so any potential punishment would be applied to the first game of 2027.
