Maryland defensive lineman Cam Rice was flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct after he hit Nebraska quarterback Dylan Raiola during the college football game on Saturday. However, Cornhuskers fans do not believe the penalty was enough.

They want him to be suspended for his actions.

I don’t think there will be any additional punishment for this dirty college football play but I could see a world where the Big Ten decides to issue a statement. The behavior was unnecessary.

Dylan Raiola hurt his leg.

This specific sequence took place late in the second quarter.

Raiola dropped back to pass on 2nd-and-5 at the 45-yard-line. The Maryland pass rush broke through the protection to chase him out of the backfield.

There was nowhere for him to go and nowhere for him to throw so he attempted a pass into no man’s land that might’ve even been an attempt to throw the ball away as he got hit. It was picked off.

The hit that knocked Raiola to the ground left him uncomfortable. The defender crashed right into his leg.

Although Raiola was able to get up under his own power, he limped off of the field with a sore knee.

As he limped off of the field, Cam Rice turned back the other direction to block for his teammate on the interception. The Terrapins defensive lineman went out of his way to knock Raiola back down while the injured quarterback tried to get off of the field. Two nearby officials both threw a flag. They charged him with unsportsmanlike conduct.

It was the correct decision. The Cornhuskers got the ball back.

Nebraska fans want Cam Rice to be suspended.

Although Rice was punished in real time, Raiola was fine and Nebraska won the game, fans of the Big Red are still not happy. They want this classless act to be treated as a much bigger deal.

“Meet #Maryland’s #10 Cam Rice. 6’ 2” 303lb DT with a dismal 10 tackles & 1.5 sacks for the season.. Got his opportunity to hit an (injured) QB, a full 10 seconds after releasing the ball.. congrats to the NCAA & the Big Ten for this dirty (3 time) transfer!!,” wrote @Ash_Pro1.

“Maryland defensive lineman Cam Rice should lose his scholarship for this meaningless unsportsmanlike stunt,” said @wrinklewormG.

“Hitting an injured player trying to get off field?!! Cam Rice should probably be given the rest of the year off,” chimed @brettolsicw.

“Suspend Cam Rice,” @HereREGOagain put simply.

There are countless other examples of this kind of call for action. Some of them are a lot more nasty.

If we are being honest, yes, Cam Rice committed a dirty play. He cost his team the ball because of it. However, I do not know whether the Big Ten or the NCAA or even Maryland will issue further punishment. There might not be quite enough here to warrant a suspension.
