Carolina Panthers head coach Dave Canales lied to multiple NFL Draft prospects about what his team plans to do with the No. 33 overall pick. Even if it is not uncommon, he probably shouldn’t have said the quiet part out loud.

It isn’t a great look…

Canales, who was hired by the organization in January after one year as the offensive coordinator in Tampa Bay, will not make a selection in the first round on Thursday night unless the front office chooses to move up. The Panthers would have picked first overall, but they traded the pick to the Bears.

Fortunately, they do not need to draft a quarterback. Bryce Young is the guy and building around him will be the priority. Unfortunately, the No. 1 pick would have obviously carried a lot of trade value.

As a result of the trade with Chicago, Carolina will not pick until No. 33.

Canales and company could go in a lot of different directions. And it sounds like they have yet to make up their mind.

Xavier Legette seems like one of the team’s top options with the first pick of the second round. The Panthers have held multiple meetings with the South Carolina wide receiver. The fit makes a lot of sense.

In fact, Dave Canales even told Legette that he is the guy!

This is where the problem lies, with “lies” being the key word. Canales admitted that he said that exact same thing to more than one player. In his estimate, it was more like 50…

As strange as it sounds, this probably is not that unusual. Head coaches, GMs, etc. presumably make similar promises to multiple NFL Draft prospects ever year. They don’t say it out loud…

Canales essentially admitted, publicly, that he lied directly to the face of multiple different players. His relationship with whomever the Carolina Panthers draft with the 33rd overall pick is starting with dishonesty.
