Fletch Palmer, the son of former Heisman Trophy winner Carson Palmer, was named as the starting quarterback at Santa Margarita in California despite claims of nepotism. His father is the varsity high school football coach.
Those who were upset with the decision were proved wrong, again, during a huge win over St. John Bosco on Friday.
The Eagles are in the middle of a historic high school football season. They are probably going to finish undefeated!
Carson Palmer named his son as the starting quarterback for Santa Margarita.
Former Heisman Trophy winner, No. 1 overall NFL Draft pick and 2005 NFL passing touchdowns leader Carson Palmer took over as the varsity football coach at his alma mater, Santa Margarita Catholic High School, in 2025. The Eagles won the CIF Open Division State Championship in blowout fashion during his first season as head coach.
Now, in year two, Santa Margarita is ranked No. 3 in the country behind only St. Thomas Aquinas and IMG Academy in Florida. It currently ranks ahead of powerhouses like Buford in Georgia, Bishop Gorman in Nevada, Allen in Texas and Baylor in Tennessee.
The Eagles are going to make the playoffs as a top seed. They expect to play for (and win) back-to-back titles. Fletch Palmer is a huge part of their success. The head coach’s son was named as the starting quarterback prior to the season. Outsiders labeled the decision as “nepotistic” because Carson chose Fletch over two high-profile transfers, including Vanderbilt commit West Stansbury.
The haters were furious. The haters were wrong.
Fletch Palmer can’t stop winning.
Santa Margarita faced its biggest test of the regular season against No. 8-ranked St. John Bosco on Friday and won by 14. It was the program’s first win over Bosco since 2011 and marked the first time since 2010 that Santa Margarita defeated Bosco and Mater Dei in the same season.
Fletch Palmer threw for 167 yards and a touchdown in the win. He has completed 65.4% of his passes for 1,251 yards and nine touchdowns through his first eight games as the starter. The Eagles are undefeated at 8-0.
Stats aside, Palmer is an incredible field general like his father. His ability to see the field is what sets him apart from his competition.
This flea flicker was exhilarating:

There was a bizarre moment near the end of the first half. Carson Palmer got into it with the officials.
Santa Margarita faced 4th-and-2 from its own 46-yard-line when the head coach gathered his offense near the sideline and sent them back onto the field without substituting. Grant Mosley, who also scored on the flea flicker, remained on the field throughout the brief meeting and caught a 54-yard touchdown on the next play but an official threw a flag for illegal substitution.
The referee thought Mosley had substituted late and/or thought the Eagles had 12 players on the field. Palmer explained otherwise.
However, after consulting with each other, the officials changed their rationale. They said that an offensive player has to cross the numbers toward the middle of the field before he can line up outside them. Santa Margarita argued the ruling was arbitrary and not supported by the rulebook. The officials enforced a 15-yard penalty and negated the touchdown anyway.
As you could imagine, Palmer was not thrilled. His frustration fell on deaf ears.

Fortunately, the overturned touchdown did not matter. The Eagles, led by the son of the head coach at quarterback, still won by 14.
