It’s hard to envy the amount of pressure Charlie Woods has to deal with as the son of one of the greatest golfers of all time. He’s also garnered plenty of attention as he attempts to follow in Tiger’s footsteps, and his lineage likely played a key role in an unfortunate distraction that led to him being eliminated from the U.S. Junior Amateur.
There tend to be plenty of perks that come with being the child of an athlete who is viewed as one of the best to ever do it in their field, but there are also more than a few downsides.
That includes the fact that there’s a very slim chance you’ll ever manage to emerge from their shadow, and while you can reap the benefits of learning from the best if you decide to pursue the same pastime, you do so knowing you’ll be hounded by comparisons to a parent who will almost always be viewed as superior.
That’s the situation Charlie Woods has found himself facing, as the 17-year-old son of Tiger Woods has spent the past few years forging his own path on the golf course after kicking off an amateur career that has led to him committing to join the team at Florida State in 2027.
There aren’t many people his age who’ve garnered more attention while competing in tournaments most people wouldn’t care about if not for his involvement, and he appeared to fall victim to his own celebrity while competing at the U.S. Junior Amateur on Wednesday.

Woods was one of the 264 players who earned the right to compete at this year’s U.S. Junior Amateur, which officially kicked off at Saucon Valley Country Club in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania on Monday.
The event kicked off with two rounds of stroke play that determined the 64 golfers who’d qualify for the match play bracket, and Woods narrowly missed the cut of +4 as one of the 14 competitors who finished one stroke above that line.
There were still two spots in the bracket up for grabs, and everyone who finished at +5 got the chance to compete in a playoff on Wednesday to determine who’d be moving on. It kicked off on the par-5 1st, and Woods found himself dealng with a tricky pitch after his second shot landed in some heavy rough in front of the green.
There’s no guarantee he would have been able to convert the up-and-down if he’d been able to avoid any distractions, but his hopes of doing so essentially vanished after a photographer decided to snap a picture in his backswing before being hit with a well-earned “Really dude?” from Woods.

Woods was one of the five golfers who bogied the hole, and they were eliminated along with the six other guys who recorded a par. Eli Wessel, Hudson Kutchma, and Zilin Gao advanced to the second hole of the playoff with a birdie, and the first two ultimately secured their spot in the knockout stage with another par on the par-3.
