Christian Walker reveals his weirdest superstitions

Superstitious Houston Astros slugger Christian Walker will go to extreme lengths to achieve success at the plate. That includes emulating a teammate’s shower routine.

He dove into some of his most bizarre pregame rituals during an appearance on the Foul Territory podcast.

Walker has been open about his superstitions in the past. Some credited a 2025 turnaround to a pregame switch up. That particular instance involved shaving his facial hair.

Uniform adjustments, grooming, and eating habits are referenced as being the first baseman’s typical avenues for finding a spark. He admitted that a few more outlandish routines go a step further.

What is Christian Walker’s wildest superstition?

“I’ll do anything for a hit,” he said. “There’s no shame in that. I shake up the little things – facial hair, pants up or pants down, sleeves, cleats… I don’t want to be in the box thinking that I need to do anything differently… So, if wearing a fresh pair of spikes or mixing up my batting glove color makes me feel like it switched the energy, that’s what we’re looking for.”

Most baseball players would agree that those are pretty normal. Ball players are a superstitious bunch. When things go cold, they look for any way to flip the momentum.

Walker was later asked about his most bizarre superstitions. These would not be deemed typical, even by the most superstitious of players.

“I’ll pay attention to which shower Yordan (Alvarez) gets in, because that guy can’t do anything wrong right now,” he said. “If it’s working for him, I’m going to mirror everything that guy does.”

Weird, but you can’t fault him for trying to get an edge. Alvarez is the most dangerous hitter in the American League. He hits for both power and average. He’s one of the most difficult outs in baseball.

Walker is trying to capture some of that good juju. For what it’s worth, whatever he’s currently doing appears to be working.

The first baseman is on a mini heater.

I got a chance to watch Christian Walker up close and personal while in college at South Carolina. He was arguably the best pure hitter on a national title winning team that boasted multiple future MLB stars.

Success has continued as a pro. He quickly elevated through the minor league system. He enjoyed a very productive run with the Diamondbacks before moving on to Houston last year.

Walker got off to a very hot start in the 2026 season. He hit .317 across his first 35 games. Since, there’s been a dip.

The average has tumbled to .239. Over his last 200 at-bats, he’s batting just .190. His latest performances, however, show the slump might be ending soon.

Walker recorded a hit in five of his last six games to end the month of June. He posted an average of .333 in that time with three of his eight hits going for extra bases.

Is superstition the reason? Maybe. Maybe not. If the success at the dish continues, Astros fans won’t care what he’s doing before first pitch.
