Clemson Fans Trash Kicker Who Came Out Of Retirement After Late-Game Miss

Clemson Tigers coach Dabo Swinney is a man of God.

Swinney makes sure to tell fans, recruits, and anyone else who will listen about his faith any time he gets the chance.

As such, Swinney is familiar with the principal of showing grace.

Clemson fans, however, weren’t feeling very graceful on Saturday after the Tigers lost to No. 4 Florida State at Memorial Stadium.

The Tigers started strongly, aided by new kicker Jonathan Weitz. Weitz, who had retired from football and only just joined the team six days ago, gave Clemson the lead with an early 30-yard field goal.

He went on to make all three of his extra points attempts as well.

But when push came to shove, the moment proved a little bit too much for the Charleston, South Carolina native.

Weitz stepped onto the field with the chance to give the Tigers the lead with under two minutes to play. Instead, he sent his 30-yard attempt sailing wide left.

The teams then went to overtime, where the Seminoles scored first on a Keon Coleman touchdown catch. Clemson could not answer when it received the ball, and Florida State walked out with a 31-24 victory.

The Tigers had plenty of opportunities to win the game. But fans felt that Weitz was the one most responsible for the loss.

As Peyton Manning would say… we lost because of our stupid kicker. How @jonn_weitz missed that kick is beyond me. Even for a college kicker. 29 yds should be automatic. Cost his teammates chance at ACC title,” one fan tweeted.

No reason for Weitz to miss that!! Today’s loss is on him,” said another.

And that was just the beginning.

To Clemson PK John Weitz: I think it’s in your best interest to quit again,” yet another fan wrote.

While someone else told Weitz “ don’t ever put pads on again buddy.”

So Clemson fans are taking the loss well…
