Everyone Is Sick And Tired Of Kirk Herbstreit And His Dog Peter Being Everywhere You Look At All Times

Okay, before we dive into this, I want to start with a very important caveat: I am a dog lover and have had dogs in my life for my entire life.

Now that that’s out of the way, somebody needs to say: Kirk Herbstreit and the nonstop obsession with putting his dog Peter on television, social media, and everywhere in between has simply gone too far.

And it appears that the majority of the college football world now agrees, even those of us who are dog lovers!

Who Is Kirk Herbstreit’s Dog Peter?

For those of you who live in a bubble, we’ll do a bit of background for you.

A couple of years ago, Herbstreit, a lead announcer for ESPN and one of the hosts of “College GameDay,” began bringing the eldest of his several golden retrievers, Ben, with him to set for the show.

Eventually, Ben found his way on camera, and it was extremely charming. Sadly, Ben passed away in 2024, and shortly thereafter Herbstreit showed up with a new golden retriever, Peter.

Herbstreit had recently adopted Peter to add to his extensive stable of dogs, and chose him as his new travel companion during game weeks. Again, nothing wrong with that.

But pretty soon, Peter began popping up everywhere. He was on “College GameDay,” he was in pregame segments, he was receiving separate media credentials from different teams.

The act began to grow a little stale.

This season, things have gone to an entirely new level. Peter has “his own” name, image and likeness deal with Hertz rental cars.

Then, this weekend, Herbstreit launched a “Peter Fan Club” store in Baton Rouge, La., with the help of Raising Cane’s. The store sells any and every type of Peter-themed merchandise you could ever ask for: from hats to shirts, stickers, and beyond.

It is a Peter Herbstreit’s fan dream.

There’s just one problem: college football fans are officially Petered out! (pun intended).

It’s obviously not the dog’s fault. He has no idea what’s going on around him. So we don’t hold it against Peter himself. But the overexposure is very real.

“Hey man… I’m a huge animal person. Anyone who knows me knows that my life revolves heavily around animal welfare, rescue, etc. That said- this is weird,” one fan posted on X. “Who is this even for? I hope, at minimum, the proceeds are going toward some sort of animal welfare.”

“I love dogs so much but omg,” Chicago Bears reporter Devan Kaney wrote.

And there were countless posts to that end.

Again, I’m sitting here writing this post with my dog, whom I love very much, downstairs. Dogs are great, and it’s awesome that Herbstreit cares for his dogs so much. But do we really need to use every waking second of airtime to tell people how much you love your dog?
