Colorado State lost its college football game against Boise State in demoralizing blowout fashion. To make matters worse, a Rams assistant coach charged at one of his own players in rage during an intense sideline altercation that required forcible restraint.
Head coach Jim Mora Jr. says the incident will be addressed internally.
The first-year college football coach in Colorado Spring did not watch the video before he commented on what happened. However, it does not reflect well on a program that continues to fall further and further into irrelevance.
Colorado State lost, again.
Jim Mora left a cushy job at UConn to become the head coach at Colorado State during the offseason. He actually paid his former employer a buyout of $1.5 million to leave a program that he led to nine wins for the first time since 2007 in back-to-back seasons. The way it all went down was awkward. Nick Saban thought he made the wrong decision and openly mocked him for bailing on the Huskies at the peak of their success to take over a Rams team that was in complete disarray.
Things have not gone well through the first nine games of the season, to say the least.
Colorado State lost by at least two scores to BYU, UTSA, Oregon State, Texas State, Utah State and now Boise State. Some of the results were worse than others. Like Saturday, for example!
The Rams allowed the No. 25-ranked Broncos to score 22 points in the first quarter during a 64-38 loss and dropped to 3-6.
To make matters worse, Mora already fired his original defensive coordinator in the middle of the game against Oregon State in Week 4. His replacement, who has been living at the team facility, literally, gave up 64 points to the likely College Football Playoff representative from the Group of Six. Not great!
A college football player got into a heated argument with his coach.
If losing by 26 points in a game that was not competitive was not bad enough, one of Colorado State’s players got into an altercation with one of Colorado State’s coaches. It is unclear as to exactly what triggered the incident.
However, the aftermath was captured by local sports anchor Jon Tritsch in a video from the sideline. Fifth-year offensive lineman Toriyan Johnson followed Jim Mora from the Nutmeg State to the Centennial State. He was attacked by strength and conditioning coach Shelton Bynum, who ran up behind the veteran leader, grabbed him by the jersey and yelled in his face. That did not go over well with Johnson, who continued to chirp back at Bynum before they were separated by other players and coaches.
Colorado State football is at a place where the care level is high but so is the tension… and may have reached a tipping point.

More addressed the incident to begin his postgame press conference. Perhaps it was because he had not yet seen the video but his reaction was surprisingly subdued.
“Let me address the video that’s out there. I’ve not seen it, of Toriyan and our strength coach, getting into it. It’s a passionate game played by passionate people that are all alpha dogs, but there’s no place for that. Once I see it, we’ll address it and we’ll go from there.”
It does not seem like the Rams or their head coach are willing to provide additional context to the on-field episode. Perhaps they will clear things up during the press conference later this week but I doubt it. The matter will be handled internally.
