Washington Commanders coach Ron Rivera made it clear that second-year quarterback Sam Howell is not the starting quarterback for the team next season. Despite reports stating that Howell is set to take over the starting position, Rivera clarified that Howell will have to compete for the starting job during the offseason.

“He’s not our starter. He’s coming in as QB1 and he’ll get a chance to be the starter.”, Rivera said.

Where Does Howell Stand

Howell, who was drafted by the Washington Commanders in the 5th round of the 2022 NFL Draft, is considered a promising young quarterback. However, Rivera’s recent statement suggests that the team is not yet ready to hand him the starting position. Rivera indicated that Howell will enter the offseason as the QB1, but he will have to compete with other quarterbacks for the starting job.

Veteran Quarterbacks and Taylor Heinicke

In addition to Howell, Rivera also mentioned that the team is looking to add a veteran quarterback to the roster.

This could indicate that the team is not yet confident in Howell’s ability to lead the team as a starter. Rivera also hinted that Taylor Heinicke, who played for the team last season, could be re-signed. Heinicke started nine games for the team last season and showed up and down play.
