The Dallas Cowboys currently sit with a 3-1 record and much of the credit can go to backup quarterback Cooper Rush. Although the starting job belongs to Dak Prescott once he returns, there is no denying how well Rush has played this season. He’s been so good, that there are already rumors that he could garner interest in free agency next offseason.

Cowboys QB Cooper Rush Rumored To Be A Top Free Agent In 2023 Offseason

According to PFF, “Cooper Rush will be an interesting case study in free agency.” He’s played extremely well for Dallas so far, which bodes well for his future success. The better he plays, the better it is for Jerry Jones and the Cowboys. They will be in a great spot once the offseason rolls around.

If Rush continues playing at a high level, the front office is going to have options. First and foremost, he will garner interest in free agency. As PFF points out, “[Teddy] Bridgewater signed a three-year, $60 million contract with the [Carolina] Panthers in 2020 after he went 5-0 as a starter with the New Orleans Saints as Drew Brees’ backup in 2019.”

If the Cowboys let him walk, then they would likely receive a compensatory pick in the upcoming NFL Draft. However, Dak Prescott has struggled with injuries the last few years, so Dallas may consider paying top dollar to retain a high-end backup.

Another option would be to franchise tag Cooper Rush and then trade him as soon as possible, per PFF. Either way, all signs are pointing to Rush receiving a big paycheck at the end of this season. We’ll see how it all plays out, but keep an eye on the Cowboys’ backup quarterback. Now it makes sense why Jerry Jones has been hyping up Rush all along.
