Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott is confident that he won’t have 10 interceptions this year, aiming to avoid a repeat of last season’s turnover troubles.
In 2022, Prescott led the league with a career-high 15 interceptions, and he added two more in a Divisional Round loss to the 49ers.
Speaking at his youth football camp in Frisco earlier this month, Prescott acknowledges the intense scrutiny that comes with playing for the Cowboys, Prescott believes that some of his interceptions can be attributed to factors beyond his control, such as dropped passes or deflections.
“I know who I am, and you can go back and take away half of those off drops,” Prescott said. “I’m not saying it’s on the receiver, but if you cut that in half then we start talking about those, nobody is talking about it.”
Despite his explanations, Prescott recognizes that he still topped the league in interceptions and intends to make significant improvements in the upcoming season.
He credits increased communication with head coach Mike McCarthy, who now calls the plays, as a key factor in his confidence. Prescott emphasizes the offense’s understanding of their roles and anticipates a significant leap in performance.
To support his goal, Prescott will need to establish a strong rapport with new players, including a reliable tight end to replace Dalton Schultz, quick chemistry with new veteran receiver Brandin Cooks, and a successful return to form for Michael Gallup after his ACL tear.
These developments, along with improved ball security, will be crucial for Prescott to avoid repeating his turnover woes.
By addressing his turnover issues, Prescott hopes to shift the narrative surrounding the Cowboys to a more positive one next offseason.
While he has thrown double-digit interceptions in four of the six seasons where he played double-digit games, Prescott is determined to rewrite that statistic and lead his team to a successful season.
