Cristiano Ronaldo came face-to-face with a rogue fan during the win over Croatia at the World Cup. The pitch invader ran across the width of the field and reached the Portugal bench before he was wrapped up by security and removed.
It was almost a disaster.
If the security team at the international soccer tournament was not already prepared, this latest incident will put them on high alert. A fan should not be able to get on the pitch.
Portugal defeated Croatia at the World Cup.
Croatia took a 1-0 lead over Portugal into 67th minute during the Round of 32 soccer match on Thursday when an unfortunate foul in the box gave its opponent a penalty kick. Cristiano Ronaldo, who had not previously scored during the knockout rounds at the World Cup, lined up for the PK. He found the back of the net to tie the score at one goal apiece. It was his first-ever goal beyond the group stage.

There may not be a bigger soccer star in the world than Cristiano Ronaldo right now. Either he or Lionel Messi…
Everybody wants to catch a glimpse of the Portuguese GOAT. It is a type of fandom that can only be compared to Taylor Swift. People lose their minds. They don’t think about the potential repercussions of their actions.
A pitch invader nearly tackled Cristiano Ronaldo.
The security team at BMO Toronto Stadium failed at its job during the late second half. Portugal subbed off Cristiano Ronaldo for Ruben Neves during the 81st minute. The soccer legend spent the rest of the match on the bench in support of his teammates. It was a tense final ~20 minutes.
Meanwhile, a fan wearing his jersey prepared for his moment of glory infamy.
The fan walked to the front row of the crowd, hopped over the security team and the restrictive barrier, and took off running. He made it all of the way across the field to the Portugal bench. Ronaldo was his target.
Although the fan did not appear to be malicious, it was a scary moment. You could see the fear in Ronaldo’s eyes as the invader neared closer. His teammate, Diogo Dalot, stepped out to protect him. The renowned fullback was prepared to do what he does best — defend.

Fortunately, the security team was able to get to the pitch invader before the pitch invader could get to the players.

This phenomenon continues to happen. Fans try to rush Ronaldo and Messi. Security needs to be better prepared. This specific fan never should’ve made it onto the field. (Although his leap was pretty impressive.)
