The new league year hasn’t even started in the NFL and we’ve already seen a few teams undergo major changes. The Dallas Cowboys haven’t joined that list yet, but they are reportedly trying to.

There have been reports that they were planning to release Amari Cooper. There has been speculation about them trying to trade Tyron Smith. La’el Collins is even reportedly a trade candidate for the Cowboys.

While they haven’t pulled the trigger on any of these deals yet, we at least now may know what they are asking for in return for one of these big names. According to NFL insider Jordan Schultz, the Cowboys are only hoping to get a 3rd round pick in return for Cooper in a trade and would even settle for a 4th rounder.

Tt’s a bit of a surprise for the Cowboys to be seeking so little of a return for Cooper given that he is still a very talented receiver and will only be turning 28 in a few months. The best explanation would be the Cowboys’ cap situation.

Even after making a slew of cuts today, the Cowboys are barely under the cap. Cooper carries a $22 million cap hit and taking that off the books could give the Cowboys a lot of room to try and improve the roster elsewhere this offseason.

You would think that at this price, some of the league’s more receiver needy teams would be lining up to put in their bids on Cooper.
