Think back to the end of last season for the Dallas Mavericks. Yes, they came up short in the NBA Finals, but the future was bright with Luka Doncic, Kyrie Irving, and a solid group of role players in tow.
But, everything has fallen apart. Luka Doncic was unceremoniously traded at the beginning of February, and injuries have decimated the roster, as the future looks very bleak.
When Dallas traded Doncic, who had made five-straight All-NBA teams at 25 years old, it was as stunning as any trade has been in the history of the NBA. The Groundhog Day trade that sent Anthony Davis, Max Christie, and a first-rounder back to Dallas was not well-received by fans, to say the least.
Everything has gone wrong since, except in the win-loss column, as the team has actually been .500 since the trade despite a multitude of costly injuries, including one to Anthony Davis in his first game as a Maverick. Last night, Kyrie Irving was lost for the season after suffering a torn ACL. It’s hard to see them staying in the playoff hunt, thought they’re 3.5 games up on the Suns for the final play-in spot with 20 games left to play.

As you can see, it’s been a miserable season for the Mavericks. Frankly, things aren’t looking much better for the future, either. Sorry, Mavs fans.
