I don’t think there were many people out there who genuinely expected to get a sequel to Happy Gilmore, but Dan Patrick is the latest person to confirm Adam Sandler is working on a follow-up to what is arguably his magnum opus after the actor who played Shooter McGavin teased the project earlier this month.

It’s pretty hard to argue the movies Adam Sandler starred in during the 1990s aren’t the highlight of his oeuvre, and at the risk of disrespecting Billy Madison, I don’t think there’s a single title in his filmography that’s stood the test of time like Happy Gilmore.

It’s been close to 30 years since Happy Gilmore hit theaters, and even though it’s safe to assume Sandler wouldn’t have had much trouble finding a studio willing to finance a sequel in the decades that followed, it didn’t seem like he had any interest in pursuing that particular project.

However, we were treated to some pretty unexpected news last week courtesy of Christopher McDonald, as the actor who’s best known for playing Shooter McGavin revealed the Sandman had shown him an early draft of the script for Happy Gilmore 2.

That development quickly came to the attention of Dan Patrick, who initially linked up with Sandler while playing himself in The Waterboy in 1998. That marked the start of a lengthy relationship, as he’s appeared in a number of his other movies since then, including The Longest Yard, That’s My Boy, and both of the Grown Ups installments.

During Monday’s episode of The Dan Patrick Show, the former ESPN personality read the text message exchange he had with Sandler after reaching out to him about a part in Happy Gilmore 2.

Here’s what transpired:

Patrick: Sandman, just trying to finalize my schedule for the upcoming year. How much time should I take off for the sequel to Happy Gilmore?

Sandler: A few days, but I’ll let you know when there’s a script. Still figuring a lot out.

Patrick: I’m just kidding.

Sandler: You’re in it, bro. You play you.

According to Deadline, Sandler will be teaming up with Netflix for Happy Gilmore 2, although the streaming platform hasn’t officially confirmed its involvement and we’re likely years away from a release.
