It’s not uncommon to see a brawl break out during a baseball game. However, it’s hard to think of one that was sparked by a bigger overreaction than the melee that led to a player breaking his arm after a former MLB prospect decided to respond to a straightforward tag with a sucker punch.
I’m going to assume most people reading this are not intimately familiar with the career of Danry Vasquez, a Venezuelan outfielder who landed a contract with the Detroit Tigers as an international free agent in 2010 at the age of 16.
Vasquez arrived in the United States the following year and spent five seasons grinding in the minors while playing for a wide variety of low-level affiliates before landing with the Corpus Christi Hooks, a Double-A team associated with the Astros that’s part of the Texas League.
However, his time with the club—and as an MLB prospect—came to an end after he was filmed assaulting his girlfriend at their stadium, as he was arrested and released by Houston after being hit with an indefinite suspension from the league (the domestic violence charges against him were ultimately dropped after he agreed to a plea deal).
Vasquez attempted to mount a comeback with an independent team in Pennsylvania before he was swiftly dropped after footage of the aforementioned attack came out, and he has primarily played in the Mexican League (aside from a pit stop in South Dakota in 2022) since heading south of the border in 2018.
His temper has continued to be an issue on the field, and that was once again the case due to an ugly incident he triggered.

Vasquez has been playing for the Toros de Tijuana since the middle of May, and on Sunday, they hosted Acereros de Monclova for an afternoon showdown.
The Toros had a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth when Vasquez made the questionable decision to try to score from third base after his teammate hit a sharp grounder to that corner of the field.
He ended up in a brief rundown that would have come to an uneventful end if not for his decision to punch Rodolfo Amador, the player who tagged him out, in the face before trying to kick him after he went down.

The benches immediately cleared as Vasquez was targeted by an opponent who sent him to the ground with a clothesline. According to Milenio, the 32-year-old instigator was one of four players who were ejected, a group that also included Monclova first baseman Ryan Hernandez, who suffered a broken arm during the fracas.
As I alluded to above, this isn’t the first time Vasquez has caused a fight over an overreaction, as he also went after a third baseman over a tag during a game between teams representing Venezuela and Puerto Rico in 2023.
The Mexican League has not announced any supplemental punishments as of this writing, but it seems safe to assume he has a suspension heading his way.
