Dequan Finn did not finish his college football career at Miami of Ohio. He quit the team in the middle of November to prepare for the NFL Draft even though the Redhawks were still in the mix for a MAC title.

The 25-year-old must now face the consequences of his actions.

Not only did Finn go undrafted, he has yet to receive an invitation to NFL minicamp. The Canadian Football Leauge is his only option to continue his career at the moment.

Who is Dequan Finn?

As a native of Detroit, Dequan Finn played high school football at Martin Luther King. He ranked as a three-star prospect in the recruiting Class of 2019. Toledo ultimately received his commitment over offers from schools like Central Michigan, Arkansas State, Cincinnati, Bowling Green and Youngstown State. It was an extremely fruitful decision.

Finn, a 6-foot-1, 215-pound quarterback, took over as the starter during the second half of the 2021 season. The Rockets went 4-3 during his first seven games at the helm. It was just a small taste of what was to come. Toledo had a lot of success in 2022 and 2023.

Finn completed 59.7% of his passes for 2,260 yards and 23 touchdowns and ran for 631 yards and nine touchdowns during his second year as the starting quarterback. However, he struggled with 12 interceptions. Toledo went 8-4.

The next season was his best season. Finn completed 63.4% of his passes for 2,657 yards and 22 touchdowns with nine interceptions to lead the MAC in passing, and ran for 563 yards and seven touchdowns.

The impressive fifth-year campaign allowed Dequan Finn the opportunity to transfer up. He won the starting job at Baylor in 2024 but an injury limited him to just three games.

Finn was allowed to return to college football in 2025 because of a medical hardship waiver, which led him to the University of Miami (Ohio) through the transfer portal. The Redhawks went 4-4 during their first eight games of the season. Their star transfer quarterback played in every game, either as the starter or in a timeshare with Henry Hesson. And then he quit…

The NFL Draft came and went.

Dequann Finn was supposed to start against his former team, Toledo, on Wednesday, Nov. 12, 2025 but he was suddenly ruled out right before kickoff. Nobody knew why. It was completely unexpected.

Some people suggested the absence was due to injury. ESPN claimed it was an illness.

Neither hypothesis was true. Head coach Chuck Martin spoke about Finn’s status on the Friday after the game. His seven-year college football career was over. Just like that.

“Dequan is moving on. We had an 11 good months with him. Dequan did some awesome things. He’s an awesome young man. We spent a lot of time together. At this point, he’s going to move on. He’s got a shot to play at the next level. He’s going to train and get ready to go do that.”

Miami was still in position to earn a bid to the conference championship at the time of Finn’s departure. The optics were horrible. It has still yet to be explained. Why did he leave?

If the decision to quit on his team really had to do with his NFL Draft preparation, and not something else that went down behind the scenes, it proved to be a horrible idea. Dequan Finn went undrafted.

And not only did he go undrafted, as of this writing on Monday morning, he has yet to sign with an NFL organization as an undrafted free agent. The B.C. Lions of the CFL placed him on the negotiation list back in March so Finn has options to play professional football, just not in the United States— yet.
