Texas High School Football Team Apologizes For Poor Sportsmanship After Being Shown Mercy

DeSoto apologized for its poor sportsmanship vs. St. Thomas Aquinas.


St. Thomas Aquinas beat the brakes off of DeSoto in high school football action over the weekend. It was a swift dose of karma after a showing of poor sportsmanship.

DeSoto refused to shake its opponents’ hands in the pregame coin toss. They school has now offered an apology.

Despite the disrespectful antics, St. Thomas Aquinas showed mercy. It could’ve hung 60 on the Eagles had it wanted to. Instead, it chose to let off the gas at halftime.

It appeared as though it would be a competitive game across the first 15 minutes. The Raiders held a 7-0 lead in the closing moments of the first quarter.

St. Thomas Aquinas gained control after Ohio State commit Jaden Carey picked off a pass and returned it for a touchdown. From there, the rout was on.

The Raiders scored in all three phases of the game before halftime. It led 38-0 at the intermission. The game was over just 30 minutes in.

St. Thomas did not score after halftime. It didn’t need to in a 38-14 victory. Instead, it opted to show grace even when its opponent wouldn’t.

Prior to kickoff, DeSoto players refused to shake hands. It set the tone for a tense matchup. The Eagles, however, couldn’t match that same energy on the field.

After having its ego bruised, the team offered an online apology.

The school took accountability for its bad sportsmanship on Monday after seeing the story blow up on social media. It was a poor reflection on players and coaches.

DeSoto, the reigning UIL 6A State Champion, was humbled. Its pregame antics looked silly after the fact. The disrespect backfired, though the final result could’ve been much worse.

One side showed grace in victory. The other got egg on its face. DeSoto has taken responsibility. We shouldn’t see a repeat of the pregame antics again this year.
