Dianna Russini and Mike Vrabel have a history. The biggest scandal in the NFL goes much deeper than it appeared when the photos of their alleged affair first dropped.

It raises questions about ESPN’s access to the Tennessee Titans’ head coach during the pandemic.

Most NFL head coaches were extremely hard to track down because of the ongoing health and safety restrictions. Russini was able to make it happen anyway.

Dianna Russini and Mike Vrabel were photographed in 2020.

This alleged affair first came to light at the beginning of April when the New York Post published a series of photos of Russini and Vrabel together at a luxury resort in Arizona. Both parties were quick to deny any wrongdoing but they could not provide any evidence of innocence and the ensuing fallout has been a disaster for them both.

The New York Post recently published a new series of photos from 2020. They show Dianna Russini and Mike Vrabel kissing at a bar. TMZ followed up with photos from 2024, shortly after the head coach was fired by the Tennessee Titans. Russini and Vrabel were together at a casino in Biloxi, Mississippi.

Needless to say, this is not a new arrangement.

Vrabel sought counseling for his behavior during the third day of the NFL Draft on Saturday. Russini has since gone dark on social media and resigned from her job at The Athletic. Everybody is innocent until they are proven guilty but it certainly feels like we have enough proof to prove them guilty. It’s a mess.

Nobody knows who took the photos. Nobody knows why it took so long for the photos to be released.

Meanwhile, the most mainstream media has remained fairly quiet on the matter. Relatively speaking. It is one of the biggest stories in football right now, maybe ever, but you won’t see much of a dialogue on the major networks. Especially before the NFL Draft. Especially on self-proclaimed Worldwide Leader…

What, if anything, did ESPN know?

As this situation continues to unfold, the biggest question that remains unanswered is: who knew what? Neither the Athletic nor ESPN have claimed knowledge of the alleged affair. They also distanced themselves from Dianna Russini after the photos first dropped. Her behavior is unnacceptable.

However, a new theory on social media adds to the growing suspicion that Russini’s coworkers might’ve known something was going on.

Samantha Ponder made a very poignant comment during Sunday NFL Countdown on Oct. 25, 2020. She said that it was nearly impossible for sideline reporters to secure an interview with NFL coaches (especially before games) because of the restrictions that were in place during the pandemic.

Steve Levy made the following post on social media shortly thereafter:

“Good job @sam_ponder pointing out how near impossible it is in 2020 to get a pregame interview with an NFL head coach and @diannaESPN gets both Tomlin and Vrabel…”

Bill Hofheimer, the vice president of PR at ESPN, offered similar praise to Russini later that season:

“@diannaESPN has covered the #Titans closely all season. Good get just now … an interview a few hours from kickoff w/ head coach Mike Vrabel on NFL Countdown.”

His post included the following image:

Meanwhile, as we know from the photos published by the New York Post, Russini and Mike Vrabel had a relationship that extended beyond the gridiron. Hm….

I don’t know whether ESPN knew how she got her access to the head coaches or if they chose ignorance. Maybe the alleged affair was really a secret until the first batch of photos dropped earlier this month. But it makes you think, doesn’t it? Did Levy and Ponder hint at something bigger? Or were they genuinely impressed by her ability to land an interview? We may never know the full truth.
