Doug Gottlieb is trying to do something that has never been done before in college basketball and it is not going well thus far. Green Bay is terrible.

The Phoenix lost every single game in the month of December after its head coach cracked a joke about how he was not going to work during the holidays. The irony is truly rich.

Gottlieb, 48, was hired by Green Bay in May. Never before had he coached college basketball. In fact, he had never coached basketball on any level. Not even a youth rec league.

The Doug Gottlieb experiment is not going well!

Not only did Gottlieb get a Division-I coaching job without any prior experience, the university allowed him to keep his other job as a radio host on the Fox Sports network. It requires him to be on the air for three hours a day, five days a week. His game day schedule typically looks something like this:

  • 7:00am — Wake up
  • 7:30am — Coffee with staff
  • 8:00am — Work out
  • 9:00am — Breakfast
  • 10:00am — Shootaround
  • 12:00pm — Arrive back to hotel
  • 2:00pm — Taped podcast
  • 3:00pm — Live on ‘The Doug Gottlieb Show’
  • 5:00pm — Off-Air
  • 7:00pm — Tip-off

Gottlieb looks absolutely exhausted by his unusual and grueling schedule. However, he was able to recharge his batteries with some family time over the holidays!

Don’t get me wrong here. Coaches have lives too. They are entitled to spend time with their family. Especially at Christmas.

With that being said, the Phoenix dropped to 2-14 with a blowout loss to Purdue Fort Wayne on Sunday after Doug Gottlieb’s tone-deaf post at the beginning of the month. His team did not win a single in December (and lost to D2 Michigan Tech) after he jokingly vowed not to work.

The first-year head coach posted the following calendar to X on Dec. 3:

As it would turn out, the calendar was the perfect way to foreshadow what was to come. Green Bay went 0-7 during the final month of 2024 after Gottlieb made that post.

To make matters even worse, star transfer Isaiah Miranda is no longer with the program after a sideline tirade during the loss to Michigan Tech. The wheels are falling off in Wisconsin.

Meanwhile, Doug Gottlieb — according to the calendar he posted — is destroying his body with food and alcohol while preparing for the inevitable disappointment that is New Year’s Eve.
