South Carolina defensive star Dylan Stewart refused to come out of the college football game against Alabama. He also threw more than one punch at tight end Josh Ford.

It was a bad look for one of the top defensive prospects in the upcoming NFL Draft.

Even if the college football game does not go your way, you cannot crash out on national television. Shane Beamer could not keep his best player in check and he might get fired for it. His players quit on him. They lost their composure.

Why did Dylan Stewart punch Josh Ford?

South Carolina rolled into Tuscaloosa on the heels of a loss to Mississippi State. It felt like a must-win game for the Gamecocks.

They got smacked. Alabama held a 35-10 lead at halftime and rolled to a 49-18 win. Keelon Russell completed 77% of his passes for 365 yards and four touchdowns without an interception. The Tide also finished with 124 total rushing yards.

On the other side of the ball, Dylan Stewart was (almost) kept off of the box score. South Carolina’s best defensive player did not record a single tackle. He finished with one quarterback hurry. No sacks, no forced fumbles, nothing else.

Alabama tight end Josh Ford — who is still getting used to the amount of trees in the Yellowhammer State — kept him in check throughout the entire game. It was a dominant blocking performance from the 6-foot-6, 266-pound tight end, who also made this incredible one-handed catch:

Stewart was fed up with Ford by the end of the night and threw a punch directly to his head that drew a penalty (but somehow not an ejection). It was caught on the ABC broadcast.

Ford told Stewart that he is a “great guy,” which triggered the sucker punch. And apparently there was more than one!

Stewart lost his cool because he and his team were getting beat. That cannot happen.

Shane Beamer is embarrassed by South Carolina’s behavior.

South Carolina spent a lot of NIL money to keep Dylan Stewart in Columbia. He is one of the highest-paid non-quarterbacks in college football. Pro scouts love him. Most people consider him to be a top-five pick come April.

However, Stewart will continue to tank his NFL Draft stock if he continues to behave poorly. It goes beyond the punch.

Shane Beamer got on him after a roughing the passer penalty during the first half.

And then Stewart threw a punch. He also refused to come out of the game and went to pout on the bench once he did.

Beamer said after the game that he was/is embarrassed by how Stewart acted.

His character has been a concern since last season.

To make matters worse for Beamer, South Carolina started another scuffle with Ford late in the game. It did not involve Stewart.
