Ed Cooley did not receive a warm welcome in his return to Providence College on Saturday. The Friars were absolutely ruthless toward their former college basketball coach.

Cooley, 54, accepted an offer to become the new head coach of the Georgetown Hoyas men’s basketball program on March 20, 2023. He decided to leave Providence for a conference foe after winning 242 games over 12 seasons in Rhode Island. It marked the first time in the 44-year history of the Big East that a conference school poached another conference partner’s coach.

His (somewhat lateral?) move was not met with understanding or support from the Friars. Cooley — who grew up in Providence — became public enemy No. 1 at the place that hired him back in 2011.

Thus, it was a very big deal when the Hoyas traveled north to the Renaissance City for their first matchup against their first-year head coach’s former team. Both schools have had this game circled on the calendar for 10 months. The Friars were especially eager to get a shot at the traitorous coach.

Students started to lineup before 8:00 a.m. for a game that started 30 minutes after noon. They literally trampled each other to try and get into the arena once the doors opened.

And then it was time to let Cooley know that he is no longer a king in Providence. He was mercilessly booed upon his entry to the court. The Friars let him hear it when he came out of the tunnel.

It was loud to start and the volume only increased after play got underway. Booming chants of ‘f— Ed Cooley’ echoed throughout Amica Mutual Pavillion.

You could even hear it on the television broadcast.

Needless to say, Ed Cooley went from a beloved figure at Providence to one of the most hated.
