Being the head coach at LSU is undoubtedly one of the best jobs in all of college football, but like any great job, it comes with extremely high expectations.

Brian Kelly was certainly in his fair share of high-pressure situations during his 12 seasons as Notre Dame’s head coach, but as the slogan says, it just means more in the SEC.

Kelly has some rather large shoes to fill in Baton Rouge. He knows this, of course, and so too does the man he’s taking over for, Ed Orgeron.

Coach O made an appearance on 1010XL on Wednesday and was asked what the expectation should be for Kelly. While Orgeron doesn’t totally agree that winning a national title is a fair expectation, he knows that it’s the expectation of every single LSU fan out there.

“I don’t know that it’s fair, but (national title) is the expectation. Great players, great support. You should be able to win a national championship in 3 years,” Orgeron explained.

Each of the last three LSU head coaches – Nick Saban, Les Miles, and Orgeron – did win a national title.

Orgeron and Joe Burrow won their national title in what was Coach O’s fourth year in charge of the Tigers. It took Saban four seasons as well, but Miles got the job done in year three.

Lofty Expectations For Brian Kelly

Kelly isn’t going to have to win the SEC in year one, but the Tigers will have to show some serious life during his first season for fans to stay on board.

Kelly’s first test will come against Florida State in the season opener, but the more important tests come later in the season when SEC play gets underway.

Of note, LSU welcomes Mississippi State, Tennessee, Ole Miss, and Alabama to Tiger Stadium in 2022.
