Monday night’s contest between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Denver Broncos was not exactly a tight one. Patrick Mahomes and company pulled away in the third quarter, making the final result of the game pretty obvious.
As is often the case during games like that on Monday night, football fans could always still find entertainment in the alternate broadcast thanks to the Manning brothers and their Manningcast.
A perfect example was in the second quarter, while the game was still tied, when Eli Manning tried to beat John Elway’s record for “throwing a football the farthest.”
For football fans of a certain age, i.e., around Eli Manning’s age, the Vortex football was a toy that they were very familiar with. Back in the day, ManningCast guest John Elway was the toy’s spokesman.
After watching the classic commercial where Elway tossed the Vortex football (with its signature whistling sound) a whopping 90 yards, Eli Manning said to Elway, “I gotta ask, do you still hold the record for throwing a football the farthest?”
“From what I hear,” John Elway replied. “I’ve not heard anybody that’s broken it.”
“I think we’re going to make some history here tonight,” Eli Manning replied while standing up and moving off camera. “And I’m going to on the Manningcast, I’m going to set a new record for throwing a football the farthest. Are you ready for this?”
Eli then launches his Vortex football and pretends to watch it fly off into the ether.
“What are we doing?” Peyton Manning then asked, watching his brother act silly. “This is the dumbest thing I’ve ever seen. I’m sorry, John. This is brutal. What are we doing?”
After a few seconds of the Vortex football whistling, another ball lands next to Peyton Manning on his chair.
“That was not a spiral either. That was not a spiral,” Peyton said to Eli.
“Why didn’t you catch it?” Eli replied.
“We’ve reached a new low here. A new low here,” Peyton then said as Eli returned to his seat with John Elway chuckling at the silliness. “Geez. What are we doing?” Peyton then asked.
